Remembering David Mabuza: A Life of Service

South Africa is saying goodbye to a familiar face in politics. Former Deputy President David Mabuza passed away on Wednesday, 3 July 2025, at the age of 64. He died in hospital in Mpumalanga after a short illness.
From
Teacher to Top Politician
David Mabuza was born on 25 August 1960 in
Phola, Mpumalanga. He started his career as a maths teacher and school
principal. In the late 1980s, he became active in teacher unions and community
work, especially during the fight for equality in education.
After democracy arrived in 1994, Mabuza
quickly moved into politics in Mpumalanga. He held several government positions
over the years, including MEC for Education, Housing, and Agriculture.
Serving
Mpumalanga and the Country
In 2009, Mabuza became Premier of Mpumalanga,
a role he kept until 2018. He was known for his strong leadership style and
deep connections in the province.
In 2017, he was elected Deputy President of
the ANC. Soon after, in February 2018, he became the Deputy President of South
Africa under President Cyril Ramaphosa.
He stayed in that role until 2023, when he
stepped down from government.
A Political
Survivor
Many South Africans remember Mabuza as someone
who knew how to navigate tough political waters. He was even nicknamed "The
Cat", after surviving what he believed was a poisoning attempt in 2015. At
one point, he went to Russia for treatment and returned with his usual quiet
determination.
A Mixed
Legacy
Mabuza’s career had both achievements and
controversies. He helped promote public job programs, land reform, and rural
development. He was also involved in important negotiations within the ANC,
especially when leadership battles were intense.
There were times when he faced serious
allegations, but he always denied any wrongdoing. Supporters often described
him as a strong but humble leader who preferred working behind the scenes.
Tributes
from Across the Country
President Ramaphosa called him a true servant
of the people. Many former colleagues spoke about his deep love for the country
and his hands-on approach. Some even shared stories about how he used his own
money to help build houses for those in need.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said
Mabuza would be remembered as a patriot and a humble leader who always put the
people first.
A Final
Goodbye
David Mabuza’s journey took him from the
classroom to the highest levels of government. He leaves behind a legacy of
service, strategy, and strong leadership.
As we reflect on his life, one thing is clear.
He made his mark in our country’s history, and many will remember his quiet
strength and steady hand.
May he rest in peace.
